Prayer for the day
You are God: I praise you; you are the Lord: I acclaim you; You are the eternal Father: all creation worships you. Throughout the world the holy Church acclaims you: Father, of majesty unbounded, your true and only Son, worthy of all worship, and the Holy Spirit, advocate and guide. As these have been from the beginning, so they are now and evermore shall be. Alleluia.
Scripture for the day
“…when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth.”
In the last chapters of John, Jesus seems particularly concerned with the truth. Not only is he concerned with the fact that he IS the truth, he is concerned that disciples believe in him and believe him.
For this belief to take effect, Jesus says that he must go away so that the Advocate, the Holy Spirit can come. When this advocate comes, Jesus says, he will guide the disciples into all truth. That is, the Holy Spirit will bear witness to the truth of the things about which Jesus has been speaking and teaching.
The Holy Spirit does not guide into a vague and general “truth” but guides into ALL truth. This means that the Holy Spirit is a trustworthy guide to lead the disciples (and their followers) into the truth of Jesus Christ and the truth about the things he spoke and lived. The Spirit is the guarantor of the things that have been promised in Christ.
The role of the Spirit is made all the more poignant when it is contrasted with the failure to seek the truth we see in the First Testament stories, when the kings who seem like they’re on their way to being able to attest to the truth of God lose their way and fall into faithlessness. The great tragedy with these kings is that so many start out seeking the truth of God, yet all it seems fall into seeking other gods, and slipping from the truth of the one true God.
May we surrender to the Advocate who will lead us not into error, but into all truth.
