To Rest Secure

Day 197

Prayer for the day

May God be merciful to us and bless us, show us the light of his countenance and come to us.

Scripture for the day

Psalm 18-19, Acts 20:17-38

Life today moves quickly. Too quickly. Things happen in the blink of an eye, and in another blink, the entire world has heard about these things. Through television, the internet, facebook, twitter, email, and every other form of communication, our world has become small and unbearably fast. The dangers and risks we only used to dream of are now at our doorsteps.

In the midst of dangers and risks, there is always a longing to be safe and be still. There is a desire simply to rest, and to know that one is protected.

The Psalmist captures the fulfillment of this longing perfectly when he says
As for God, his way is perfect:
The Lord’s word is flawless;
he shields all who take refuge in him.
For who is God besides the Lord?
And who is the Rock except our God?
It is God who arms me with strength
and keeps my way secure.

These beautiful sentiments express the great strength and protection of God. They express a place of no fear, no danger, and no doubt. They express the thoughts and feelings of someone who has found refuge. He has found a place to rest secure.

The apostle Paul, along with those who would follow him, seem to have found similar refuge. As Paul speaks to his friends, those to whom he has preached the good news of Jesus Christ, he tells them that the Holy Spirit has told him that he will be hurt, persecuted, and imprisoned wherever he goes. Nonetheless, he finds great joy in following his God, knowing that he rests secure in the hands of Jesus.

May your life be lived in the knowledge that you rest secure in the love of your saviour.
