Prayer for the day
Awesome things will you show us in your righteousness, O God of our salvation, O Hope of all the ends of the earth and of the seas that are far away.
Scripture for the day
Have you ever wondered why good things happen? A lot of people wonder why bad things happen, but very few of us are concerned about the good things that happen and the rationale for them.
When the prophet Isaiah pronounces his prophecies of doom and gloom to the people, he usually inserts a small caveat, a little addendum, that states that the people will see something amazing: the doom and gloom will come about, but God will not abandon his people.
In fact, says the prophet, there will be a time coming when the things that were dead and dying will be revived by the pouring out of God’s Spirit among the people. This is before Pentecost, before the gift of tongues and everything else. This is simply the prophet speaking about God’s amazing grace. God’s Spirit will be poured out, and things will be made right.
Paul picks up this thread of conversation in the Second Testament in his letter to the church at Colossae. Paul prays that the Holy Spirit would descend on the Christians there, and that their lives would be typified by the kind of wisdom, knowledge, strength, endurance, love, and joy that come from a life committed to the work of God and the ministry of the Holy Spirit.
The Spirit does all sorts of things in our lives, brings all sorts of gifts and blessings. Paul’s desire was that these gifts and blessings would be a living proof and pointer to the goodness of God in the world, and that people would receive the joy and strength that come from living dedicated to the Spirit.
May your life be so filled.
